Any of you fellas ever tried fishin the stumps right under the drop-offs? I ain't very good with the depth finder yet but seems like there's usually something behind or 'below' most stumps; bait balls or larger fish, one or the other. I'm talkin bout where the bank has caved off and left the stumps in maybe 8-15 ft, of water. I havent scored yet, but I been tryin it. Lost a little tackle is all I accomplished so far.

Structure draws fish sinker. I prefer to fish standing stumps on flats that break the surface or come close to it. Seems the cats like to roam among the stumps searching for perch holdiong next to them of a night. But wood structure on or near a dropoff always seems to hold a few cats about anytime of day.

When time allows, I like ta approach fishin just like it was huntin. I always had better luck goin where my target is than I did waitin fer it ta come ta me. That's what put me on this venture in th first place. That an the fact that often times just as the jugs (when I happened ta be jugfishin) would get to these same areas fish would become attached. Now that is the kind of circumstance that holds my interest, butit has had a drawback. Almost as sure as a fish would get on, that jug-line would be snagged up. I had a conversation with jtrew about this awhile back and believe that circle hooks will help some. I'm positive it will help on the ones that make it all the way into the rootwads before I can get to them. I'm talking about the ones without fish of course. Anyhow, like ya said, structure draws fish and this is the most plentiful structure I got ta work with.

I hate loseing hooks n sinkers but learned at an early age from my catfishing mentors(dad mainly) is that you got to lose hooks to catch fish. In other words you got to get right in the rough stuff with them to catch em regular like. Also it seems the more hooks you lose the bigger the fish usualy is...lol A day fishing and catching a limit of 10 is a good day if i only lose 8 or 10 rigs...lol

Yeah, fishin is one time it pays ta take risks. I had a heck of a time learning to tie hooks on;I couldn't memorize knots. I didn't catch many good size fish because I wouldn't get near the cover.

keep fishin the stumps. a lot of old channels have stumps along there edges. fishing the edges of river channels in the main lake is a very good spot to try .. i was raised useing flasher sonars i still like flashers better than fishfinders that show you a picture screen. oh well im just a little oldfashioned i guess.

By golly, I hope it ain't MUCH longer! I'm so hungry fer catfish, I'm goin inta withdrawals! It was late when I got around last nite. Trollin motor quit and I had ta paddle inta where I get shad (shallow). Had ta learn the differences in throwin a nylon net, compared to my old mono. By the time I got where I wanted ta fish, the storm was almost on me, so I didn even try ta sonar anythin. Lost one bait to a turtle, and had ta vacate. Just missed gettin soaked, which I wouldn't have minded but th dern lightning was just too close fer comfort!
