Old lady hates stumps in one lake we fish cause i make her sit on the bow and watch for them. Bad thing is she can be looking right at a real hawg of a stump 2 inchs under the water and can't see it. I stand up in the back of the boat and see em if their within 6 inchs of the surface or so. Shes supposed to be watching for the ones i can't see though. I usualy find those with the prop and skeg...lol

All of them really. They look for them lil redears and bluegills holding next to the stumps. Now if you can find a big log pile or rock pile among some stumps you got a pretty good spot for flatheads. Keep in mind flatheads are a lot more territorial then blues or channels. They like to stay within their home area which may be a big cove or just a big eddy in the river depending on food supply.
I like to jug stump fields of a night on big mud flats, especialy near the main channel or deep water. Thats why my TM shaft is bent...lol I like to fish the edges of the stump fields near the deep water/channel with a rod of a night to, especialy around dusk or dawn.

Stump Fields. This means learnin th lake. I've squirrel hunted most of what is now covered up from dry ground that is. Somehow it doesn't have the same characteristics it did then. Where there once was a ditch or small wet weather creek now it is mostly mud flats. Areas within my reach, economically speakin, are too shallow and covered with small underwater dunes of sand and silt. Top that off with acres of flats above the waterline covered with debris, namely logs and manmade litter. Now I know there are fish to be hooked........but landed? The whole dam mess I've described is covered with willow sprouts of various size. The intermittent water raises have killed off the sprouts and they've come back in varying degrees. Same with grape vines, locust sprouts, blackberry bushes, poison ivy, and honeysuckle. Tie it all together with monofilament line, and ya get an idea what the vast majority of the upper end of Truman is like! To learn it, or burn it; that is the question! I may be forced to venture into this morass, and soon, as something unexplained has happened to my usual fishin waters. It's getting on toward nesting time and still dern few fish are being found. Toward the last of summer last year catching slowed down as it always does, but still lots of respectable sized fish could be sonared if not caught. It may be that I'll have to explore the unnavigable.......or quit!

Sounds like good catting water. If it's deep enough use live baits or cut shad and floats. Fish a heavier mono and rod then you normaly would. Otherwise fish the edges. Should be a main channel runs down through all that to. I get into the rough stuff like that i fish floats on heavier rigs then usual and fish a lot closer to the boat as well. Less line out gives em less chance to wrap you up.

I'm gettin real discouraged bout this river situation. Sonar not showin anything of size, and only catchin 5 lb average blues and channels mostly. And only 1 flathead outa 40 er 50 fish! Somethin ain't right. I'm startin ta .......no, I'm thinkin somebody's made a few passes with a telephone operation. Cream's gone, nuthin left but the skim milk! Gonna tke the finder up th river as far as I can git an check it comin back, but I've got my doubts on findin much!

Biguns may still yet be holed up in brushpiles and the bank from the spawn. Id be looking for some deep holes to as the temps went up the last week or so. That and back under the heavy cover along the banks in fairly deep water in the shade.

Nuthin much showing up in those deep holes. We did catch 2 blues in a 16 ft hole. Both dead. That, with no current spells no oxygen ta me. If that's the case, and with 89- 91 degree top water, the fish may have dropped back down into th lake, but I doubt it!

Nows the time then to fish the shoals and right below them. Any kind of undercut bank with current. I like to wade the river and find shoals running off into deeper holes and fish the headwaters. Especialy if they run into an undercut bank or brushpile. I usualy do pretty good in the 5-15lb range with the odd Big cat.
