i haven't ever tried to trap minnows. i have trapped perch before with a minnow trap . i used a wire cage about 10 inches in diameter with funnel on both ends. i bait it with a slice of bread or crackers.i would like to get a crawdad trap and trap some crawdads some time . live crawdads are killer brown trout bait.

It's been a long time since I trapped minnows but I used one of the wire cages like that with crackers when I did.It worked pretty well. When I was a kid I used a gallon jar with a funnel that fit on the mouth of the jar and caught many minnows that way.

Minnow traps work ok if you can keep other folks from stealing them or your bait and your not in a hurry. A cast net works well if you can catch a big school in a hole in the creek you can throw in. But best thing is a plain old minnow sein, quick n easy. Grab a bucket or two, the sein and a partner then hunt up a nice gravel hole full of hog head minnows. Ease into the hole and work around untill you got the sein across the hole and can work the minnows into shallow water preferably onto a gravel/sand bar. Make your dip and sort em into the bucket(s). Toss the shiners unless you want to keep some to put in jars and set in the sun, they wont stay alive long enough to fish with without a major baitwell. Keep the crawdas for bait or eatting and your good to go. Just stay away from the large rocks and sticks in the whole and your golden. Takes me about 15 minutes and a wet pair of feet to get enough bait to limb line or fish for a couple of days...lol

One other method is one the old indians used to use for minnows as well as full sized fish. The MDC frowns heavily on this one though...lol Black walnut hulls. They would find a hole with fish in it they wanted. Take black walnut hulls and crush em up then toss em in the upstream side of a hole in a bag they had made or just loose. The chemicals in the walnut hulls permeate the water and paralise the gills of the fish causeing them to roll belly up and come to the top and/or wash downstream across the next shoal.

B;LACKWALNUT HULS? THIS SQUAW AIN'T NEVER HEARD THAT ONE, AND IT SOUNDS KIND OF MEAN. TO DEPRIVE THE FISH OF AIR, THAT JUST DON'T SEEM TOO RIGHT TO ME. I CAN SEE USEING A THROW NET, OR EVEN A SMALL HOOK, TO CATCH THEM, BUT TO DEPRIVE A CRITTER OF AIR, THAT JUST DON'T SOUND RIGHT.

LOL!! those black walnut hulls can be used for alot of different things.Guys used to tape a couple of mashed up hulls to their ankle for a little while and it would make a real nasty looking fake bruise(sprained ankle) that could come in handy if they wanted to get out of a long march in the service. You probably wouldn't want to make a habit of that though...

Makes a real good trap dye and will inhibit rust on em for water sets. helps cover the human stink to. Works as a dye for clotheing as well. Don't get the chit in your eyes though...lol
