tell me what you think about chumin a hole. i have only tried to chum for catfish once . i made me up some pretty good chum rigs. 4 inch pvc with a cap on one end and plug on the other. with 5/16 holes drilled in it. tubes are about 16 inches long. 22 i filled with old roy gravey chunks. and 2 i filled with chicken livers. the results were not very productive. i dropped the rigs on a spread along a channel break where the flat was 8 ft deep aand the channel was 40 ft deep on beaver lake"old white river channel" . i really thought i would kill the blues and channels in the area i was fishing. so tell me your success stories useing chumming devices for cats please. all information is appreciated.

Got to pre-chum a hole to do any good at it. Don't work real well tossing out chum then trying to fish at the same time. A few hours at least and the best bet is chum for a day or two before fishing a hole. Soured grain and cottonseed cake is a prime chum for cats n carp. Best way is put a bucket full of corn, oats, milo ect out in the sun and fill it up with water. Let it soak up the water and cook in the sun. Keep the water level up around the top level of the grain. A couple of good hot days usualy does the trick. Now get you a sheet of cottonseed cake and a good burlap bag. Put the cottojseed cake in the bag, add a nice large rock, pour in the soured grain and tie off the top. Either tie it to the bank with a rope or tie the rope to a float to mark the spot and to retreive the bag. Put it on the upstream side of the hole you intend to fish. Come back later that day or preferably the next day and fish the area below the bag. In shallow or clear enough water you can watch the carp/cats actualy rolling on the bag to break loose small bits of grain to feed on. You just want to tempt em, not feed em.
If your wanting to chum and fish the hole pretty much at the same time do up the grain. Then when you get to the lake go to the first hole you intend to fish and toss out a can or two of grain. Then move on to the next hole and the next. After you have chummed the three or four holes you primarily intend to fish go back and setup at the first one and start fishing. After an hour or so it should start to draw in the fish. Again use small soured grains and just enough to tempt em, give em a taste not feed em.
In heavy current the bag trick works the best as free floating grain just gets washed out of the hole. Useing a coffee can, PVC, gallon jug ect you can use things like ole roys gravy chunks. But the key still is time. Got to give it time to work. The longer it sets the better it gets.
