Well after procrastinating a while I finally ordered me some (new to me) Penn reels.I've got 3 209s coming and an old Penn 79 for baitfish.2 of the 209s are the newer style w/ black cases(but still made in USA) and 1 of them is an old vintage with the maroon sideplates,it has the original box, book, tools, and lube with it.I should be getting them by mail in a couple days. I've always been a big fan of spinning reels but I'm making the switch.

I was determined to make myself learn to cast a B/C this year.I spooled up my Ambassadeur and got out in the driveway and spent a couple hours casting some sinkers and I think I've got it about down.I had a couple small over-runs but no bird nests,I'm ready to take it out to the water now.Last year I threatened to throw it in the lake,so I figured I better try it around dry land first this year.lol I still can't get the distance I can with my spinning gear but I guess that will come with some experience.

It don't do no good ta fling a line a mile if that ain't where th fish are! The only one caught th other day wasn't 20 ft. from th boat. Bait halfway across th river seemrd ta get chewed up, probly by turtles, but it didn catch diddly. I don't need ta tell you that it matters more bout cover, depth, current, an all that other jazz a lot more'n how far ya can throw. More ta th point; ya gonna catch more fish close to th boat than ya are a long ways down th driveway!!!
Oh, yeah. If ya gotta throw th thing; throw it at me, not a tree. lol

I got the first 2 209s in the mail today.I am pretty impressed with how easy they cast and they look like they would reel in moby dick if I could hook him.

A lil trick to casting baitcasters is to sidearm it, not throw overhand like you do with spincasters. Especialy with a heavy weight/bait. Your a lot less likely to birdsnest. Throwing overhand you have a tendancy to 'overthrow' and at the end of your rod movement you let your line go a bit slack and cause the birdsnests. Getting the proper 'tension' adjustment on the spool before the cast for your rig is important.

I go at night so I cant see how far I cast.
Reel tension does play a big part in yer reels casting performance. Some adjust nicely an some dont. One of my shakespears has centrifigal weights you can adjust, as well.

Well I haven't caught any monsters yet to put them to the test but I like them so far.As of now for my personal collection I have four 209s,one 309,one #9,one 4/0 senator,0ne 79, and one 85.I think the Penn's might be addicting.I have also bought several more that I have fixed and sold around here local.I am really impressed with the #9,it is similar in size to an abu 6000/6500 as far as line capacity (it is rated 275 yds 15lb).I have thinned my personal reels down to the older vintage reels. When I go out I mostly use the #9 and my favorite of the 209s which has new drags and I put an over size handle on it from a 309.The 4/0 Senator I have on a 7' solid glass antique Montague rod.It might come in handy if I need to winch up a sunken boat from the bottom of the lake(it is a pretty large combo).

No kidding,I was up that way last weekend,I was at Windsor Crossing and there was no shortage of water there.I'll bet there is alot of lower ends on boats taking a beating on hidden stumps and debris floating around.

I'm havin a lot more trouble casting this year than before. I know it's because with th faster current, heavier weights are neccasary, and like Wolf said, it DO change th dynamics. Also th rod I use most is too light action toward th tip and that extra flip don't help.

It does make a big difference.I have been switching around alot trying to get the right reel matched with the right rod here. The 2 I've been using most lately is a 209 on a 7' Zebco knock-off of a ugly stick cat rod and a 209 on a 6' Shore Master boat rod.Hard to believe but I can get the most distance out of the 6' boat rod,it is a heavier action E-glass blank thru handle rod rated for 50# line and 8 oz. lure.I have another boat rod just like it only 5 1/2' with a zebco 808 hawg reel on it I use for when I need some distance to get to a certain spot. Most of my other reels are on 7 1/2 and 8' rods but they are harder to throw from the boat without sending someone's hat sailing out into the lake.
