Got to thinking about some more stories after i posted a couple.
Several years back(like 30...lol) i had a good friend id pretty much grew up with. He did a little tag along hunting with me but was more 'citified' then this woods rat. In other words he was'nt to wildlife smart...lol
Anyway he tagged along one day as i was going to do some coyote hunting. It had snowed, then sleeted then rained a bit and froze it all together into a real nice glaze about 4 inchs deep. I had the chains on the truck but it was still slow and slippery going as well as COLD!
Coyotes had had more sense then us and had stayed holed up somewhere's warm all morning so we decided to call it quits. Mouth calls were freezeing up anyway.
On the way back home on one back road there were a couple of huge fields on each side of the road where i had been seeing a BIG Tom Turkey pretty regular. Well as we're going down the road here he comes out of one field to slide across the road and into the next field.
Me being me i thought id have some fun and bet my buddy he could'nt catch this tom. The tom is slideing all over the ice not makeing much headway so my buddy figured it was a sure thing.
He forgot turkeys can fly i reckon and did'nt take into account them big honking wings with large hard knuckles plus the 2 inch sharp spurs and nice sharp beak.
I figured if he was lucky(unlucky?) enough to catch this old tom he was in for an eye opening arse whooping...lol
Well by the time the tom has clawed his way out of the ice covered ditch and into the field my buddy has left the truck.
Tom see's him come slideing around the front of the truck and figures "uh Oh, somethings up!"
The toms legs go into second gear then third but his body is still stuck in low range. He's not makeing much headway.
He's got to get a head of steam up to get airborne so i figure this is going to get interesting.
Buddy slides into the ditch and pulls himself out by the bottom wire of the fence and into the field. Toms got about a 20 yards head start on him and working hard for more.
Buddy starts trying to run and immediately falls on his tail.
Toms trying to hit high gear himself and keeps planting his tail on the ice as well.
So im setting there in a nice warm truck watching the ice ballet of my buddy and this 20 pound plus tom in the middle of the field.
Laughing and just waiting untill my buddy finaly has the 'experiance' of laying hands on a real live wild turkey...lol
Well they slither around each other in a couple of circles on their bellies, their butts and in about every other position you can imagine.
Finaly just as i think it's going to get good as my buddy slides in on his belly like he's stealing second base and grabs at this turks legs, the turk gets airborne. Between flapping them big wings and digging his toenails in i guess he got enough speed up to get about 2 feet off the ground. Buddy jumps up and tries to run after him and just kind of goes down spread eagle and sets there watching the tom hit the ice, slide about 30 feet then skitter off the rest of the way to the woods on his feet like a drunken ice dancer.
Me? Im crying by now after watching these two slide around each other in circles and in some of the most controted postions you can imagine. Sadly my buddy did'nt learn first hand grabbing onto a live wild turkey is tantamount to crawling into the Ring with Joe Frasier and calling him a sissy.
By the time he slid back to the truck my eyes were dry and i had composed myself into a believeable sorrowfull state about him not catching 'his turkey.'
I did finaly break down and tell him a few weeks later just how lucky he was by not catching the bird when he mentioned the adventure. Also just how funny the both of them looked skateing on the ice.
