I did a lot of looking and some useing before i picked the meridian series. One thing is they will pick up a satalite signal where many others wont. Ive sat inside the house or out in a camper and as long as it was near a window it would pick up the sats. Most others wont.
Never had a problem with it picking them up outside in heavy cover or overcast skies where many others wont pick em up.
The gold at 189 bucks is a good buy. Unless you want a baraometer or digital compass that will point north even while your stopped the gold has everything you need for fishing, hunting or driveing.
It has a north finder so you can tell where north is even standing still so a digital compass is'nt needed. Step up to the platinum series and you get the compass, barometer and weather forecast.
They just about all of them give you your altitude from sea level.
One thing i like about the meridian is once you upload a map you can do an elevation profile on a proposed route. You mark where you are and where you want to go and it shows you a side view of the areas profile. Keeps you from walking up and down steep hills or comeing up on a bluff. It will also show you a roads elevation profile as you drive, the curves comeing up ect. Speed, distance, estimated time of arrival ect. get the mapsend roads CD and it will even go right down to individual address's.
The explorists series is good but their kind of a cheaper version, or started out that way, to get more sales.
The meridans have a thousand uses besides just showing you where you left your truck or treestand. Got swivel mounts for the boat and vehicles, lighter plugins ect as well. You can swap the unit from vehicle to vehicle or boat to vehicle ect. Their pretty handy.
You can pay more and go more high end but you don't get a whole lot more in them then you do the meridain gold.
If i bought another one it would be the platinum for the barometer and digital compass. Only thing id like to have extra on mine is a thermometer. Not sure if any of them have that though.
