Some of ya know already, but I fish an area where 2 rivers come together. Early last year we tried deep holes and outside bends, etc. up th smaller one, where we'd had very good fishin th year before. There's usually considerable less current on it, and most years there are good cats caught for a long way up. Last year it seemed th cats didn't choose to inhabit this river like usual. I think this year when it gets ta where I can stand th temperature, I'll try th first deep hole or two, which lie beside bluffs. If I do no good there, I guess I'll try the larger river. Any thoughts or suggestions?

That sounds like a good plan you have already.Last year they were just in a different pattern than usual I believe.Maybe they could sense a change in the weather cycle,I think we are going into a different cycle anyway. The old timers (some)say we have 3 cycles of 7 years which start over every 21 years.I'm not sure where we are in the cycle but I would guess if a guy kept a journal whatever worked 21 years ago would be what he needs to do now. My mom keeps a weather journal and you would be surprised how close it hits to predicting weather patterns

I don't know what it was like here 21 years ago.I lived in Palm Beach, Florida and was prolly fishing for snapper or something. It was about a 5 minute walk down to the pier but that was back when I drank a little too much and my memories aren't that clear.

Hmmm.. Trains, last time I was on one was......Oh yea, location, location. The blues oughtta be in them deep holes right away this spring but I still aint got the flatheads figured out up around these lakes.I know where they should be but it didn't pay off last year for me.I'm gonna keep moving around on the mudflats till I get it figured out.No better than I done here last year, I couldn't try to tell you how to catch one over there.Hopefully it will be a little more normal year this year.If not a guy might need to get a phone and call em' in.

I had a magazine here that had an article on the same subject you was asking about but it seems to have walked off.I've been looking for it for the last couple days.I found an article online about catching some coldwater flats though,it might be worth a read. Frosty Flateads, you might give it a read and in the meantime I might find the magazine and article I was looking for.

I admit I'm a natural skeptic, and that I excell in distrust. I was readin along an doin ok until I hit those tidbits about not knowing how important scent is yet claiming 25% snag rate. Jiggin aggressively in a radar-discovered "herd" of dormant fish is "snaggin" !!! I ain't callin nobody a liar, but sometimes not knowin what yer talkin about is bout th same thing. I've seen a lot of buffalo and carp caught on jigs,too.......but I never wrote no article in a fish rag claimin nuthin! It was a fun read, anyhow. Thanks.

I had to go back and read it,I only skimmed through it as I was searching.I haven't done much winter fishing for cats but I can't imagine that scent isn't important in cold water because it means everything in warmer water. I found the magazine here I was looking for but it is several pages long and with pictures so it would be hard to take it out of context and have it mean anything without the illustrations to go with it.It was also from the In-Fisherman but it sounded like these guys knew more about what they were talking about. The In-Fisherman has some good articles in their magazines but their online articles are pretty sorry, the ones I can find anyway.

Them blues is out cruiseing, not laying up in holes. Their a cold water cat anyway, they just slow down a lil. Now channels and flats will find a nice deep hole and stack up. 'IF' you can find one of their wintering holes you can get into some hot n heavy action, even on flats. Cahnnels are more active but drop a big ole chub or half a shad in amongst a pile of flats in a hole and you will find hungry cats. Find em and you may have a 100 of them in one big pile. It's just to d@mn cold to go look! 20 years ago id of been getting minnows in a trap and fishing for winter time bass as long as it was'nt iced over. Flipping a jig for crappies to. Going to have to warm up about 20 degrees to about 35 or so before i do that though. Frigging windchills!
